Trail Update:

The trails in Oneida County opened on December 23rd! They are in fair to good early season condition. Lake Nokomis has been marked. Thank you to the following volunteers who helped make that happen:

Barrel Crew: Gary Gavin, Dan Johnson, Mark McDonald, Roger Selmer, Randy Theobald, and John Wojcik

Stake Crew: Tim Burkard, Carl Dowse, Bruce Hackel, Brian Hager, Greg Johnson, Len Long, Matt McDonald, Jerry Otterholt, Dennis Wenker and Mike Wick

Our groomers have also been out working hard to get the trails in the best possible shape. We could really use some more snow to make them better. Many thanks to all our volunteers for the hours you put in to making our trails safe and fun to ride!

We already had issues with off-trail riding. Failing to stay between the blazers could result in a trespassing fine. Please respect the land owners and stay on the trail!

Stay Between The Blazers Campaign:

Mark McDonald gave an update on the "Stay Between The Blazers" campaign.

  • $1,500 was approved for the campaign
  • WJJQ radio advertising spots have started and will run through January. We are looking for volunteers for content ideas and new voices to record ads. Send an email to info@northwoodsriders.org if you would like to participate or have ideas.
  • Northwoods Passage is working with Rhinelander radio group to do trail reports and blazer ads. We will participate in ads on Rhinelander stations also.
  • Posters and signage will be ordered to put up at key businesses and trail locations to educate everyone on legal implications for off-trail riding.
  • We will not be doing a billboard on Hwy 51 this year.
  • Northwoods Passage is using sponsorship ads on Face Book

Badger State Games Torch Run:

The 34th annual Badger State Winter Games 2023 Snowmobile Torch Ride is happening next week! Members of the Northwoods Passage Snowmobile Club will be leaving the Tomahawk Sports Center via the Bearskin trail Thursday, January 19th at 12:45. Area sledding enthusiasts are encouraged to head out to the Bearskin and cheer our local riders on as they go past. Suggested areas to congregate are at the map kiosk area on Hwy A, the Wind Mill area or the Groomer shed trail entrance. We will be meeting Northern Trails Unlimited at Hwy K and pass the torch to them. They will continue on to Hazelhurst Pub to arrive there around 12:45. Hope to see you on the Bearskin next Thursday!

Volunteering Opportunities:

Trailside Cookout:

On Saturday February 4, 2023, the Northwoods Riders Snowmobile Club will be hosting its annual Trailside Cookout. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chili and beverages will be served by club volunteers from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The cookout will take place at the Northwoods Riders club garage at 2640 Co Rd L - just north of Lake Nokomis if you choose to come by car. There will also be signs posted on the Bearskin Trail for snowmobilers.

We are looking for chili and dessert donations. We are also asking for volunteers to help serve that day. There will be a sign up sheet at the January meeting. You may also contact Chetek Wenker at 715-213-3864 to sign up. It would be really great to see new members get involved!

Club Member Breakfast:

Volunteers are needed to work at the club member appreciation breakfast on Sunday February 5th at Billy Bob's. If you would like to volunteer, email us at info@northwoodsriders.org or there will be a sign up sheet at the January meeting. There will also be a gun drawing at the breakfast. Tickets will be sold at the January meeting.

Youth Group and Website Volunteers:

We are also seeking volunteers to help with our website and to coordinate a youth group. If you are interested in learning more about what these opportunities are about, please email us at info@northwoodsriders.org

Donations were sent out to Salvation Army Backpack Program, Our Sisters House, Ties That Bind Us (pictured), Tomahawk Food Pantry and Tomahawk Kinship.

Club Rides:

Club rides are organized rides leaving from a common meeting point around the Lake Nokomis area. A group leader will plan a route (50-75 miles) with stops at area establishments. This is a fun way to get out and enjoy the trails and meet new people who love to ride as much as you do! If anyone is interested in organizing a club ride, pick a date, location, etc., then email the club at info@northwoodsriders.org and we will do an email blast and Face Book announcement. Chris Schultz has already volunteered to organize a ride (thanks Chris!) so stay tuned for more details to follow!

Destination Overnight Club Ride:

An overnight club ride is planned for Friday January 27 through Sunday January 29th. Those that have signed up will meet at the club shed at 8:45 a.m. and leave at 9:00 a.m. Please let Dale Elliott, 715-551-8555, know if you are registered and won't be attending. An agenda will be provided the morning of the ride.
